The brief

A family home built with natural materials.

How we built it

The plot is long and narrow, on a residential street in a conservation area. The original cottage was demolished, and the new house is split into two parts: a bedroom wing and a living area, linked by a corridor with a courtyard between them. The split brings daylight into the middle of a deep plot and gives the family a private outdoor space.

The timber frame was stick-built on site, with wood fibre insulation in the walls and roof. Brick and Scottish larch on the outside and a zinc standing seam roof suit the conservation setting. Triple-glazed windows and doors and solar panels keep running costs low.
