How we built it

We built this house in Peebles to a design by architect Keith Renton. The walls are a timber frame filled with wood fibre insulation, then wrapped outside in two layers of wood fibre board and rendered. The roof joists are filled with blown cellulose and topped with more wood fibre under VM ZincPlus standing seam.

The airtight layer is taped OSB, sealed at every joint, window and junction with SIGA tapes. The house tested at 0.83 m³/(h·m²) at 50 Pa, and triple-glazed windows keep the heat in.

An air source heat pump, MVHR and solar panels run the house on very little energy.

Inside

The ground floor is one long, bright space, with tall windows to the garden and terrace. An oak staircase with a glass balustrade rises to a full-height landing window.
