Carsluchie Croft

A prefabricated eco family home in Midmar, Aberdeenshire

The brief

A young family with two children wanted a spacious, energy-efficient home in the Aberdeenshire countryside, plus an indoor swimming pool in an adjoining building.

Our approach

The house was prefabricated off-site and craned into place, so the shell went up in days and was weathertight quickly. Outside, it pairs local stone with vertical larch cladding under a slate roof.

Inside, the living space opens up to a double-height vaulted ceiling with exposed timber trusses and steel tie rods. Tall triple glazing runs up the gable to frame the hill views, with a timber gallery landing overlooking the open-plan kitchen and living area below. Underfloor heating runs throughout.

The indoor pool sits in its own building alongside, keeping pool humidity out of the house.

The result

A bright, airy 250 m² family home that stays warm and cheap to heat, with a pool next door.

The finished house

The build

The prefabricated wall and roof panels were craned into place on site, getting the house weathertight in a fraction of the time of a traditional build.
